How to install Windows 10(Technical Preview) without any risk of losing your data

As you might be aware that Microsoft had released their beta version of the nex gen Windows. They call it Windows 10 and right now it is in the technical preview stage, so they have made the basic view look really simple and since Windows 10 Technical Preview is not the final version of Windows 10, Microsoft can still add more features to it which might be a surprise!

The Windows 10 Technical Preview is on their website and you cal download it for free, BUT read these importanat short bullets:-

  • Price:- Free
  • Package:- Full package licensed including a product key
  • Risks:- While downloading you can lose all your user data while updating.
So these short 3 lines make it very clear that you might want to create a backup disk before proceeding to install Windows 10 Tech Prev. (if you want).

WARNING: You are (if willing) doing this at completely your risk and I am not a 100% sure whether something wrong might happen or not. So, I will not be at charge or responsible if your device gets messed up!

What if you want Windows 10 Technical Preview installed without risking your PC?

If you are looking for the tech prev. without any issues or risks, then you might just use a virtual machine. A virtual machine is basically a toy which can be used to host other Operating Systems on your PC. It will look like a window on your PC with another parallel OS running... Sounds fun, right? There are many such software applications of a Virtual Machine(VM) available for free on the internet. I prefer Oracle based VirtualBox as it is very simple to use.

How do I get VirtualBox application and how do I set it up?

First you have to download the ISO file of Windows 10 from their site. You can download VirtualBox from this link and head on to 'Downloads' on the left side. The best part of this software is that you can download VB on any device - Apart from Windows, also for Mac, Linux and Solaris hosts! This is amazing! So, after downloading the one suitable for you and going through the setup, click on New and then chose the OS you want to run. In the MS Windows it has all versions from Windows 3.0 to Windows 10. It means that you can have XP, 7, 8, 8.1 or even our least favorite Vista :D...

From, there after creating a new virtual OS, you have to select it and click 'Settings' on the top.

In Settings>Storage, click 'Empty' under 'Controller IDE' and under attributes there is a little CD icon which you have to click From the directory select the downloaded Windows 10 Technical Preview(iso file) and then click OK.

There(in Settings) you also get to change/modify all the options regarding the virtual OS. You can change how much RAM or ROM you are giving this virtual OS or even allowing sharing... You can use the same internet connection from your host OS etc.

Be careful while setting values for the Guest OS!

The important thing to make sure is that you don't set the ROM/RAM storage capacities to a large value as they can make you Host OS slow down as the Guest OS (virtual) will get more room. It's like if a guest comes to your house he gets access to only a guest room and the host gets control of many things in the house. Remember that is how you want the virtual box to setup!

So that's all you have to do for having Windows 10 Technical Preview. The Preview is meant only for toying around and Microsoft are still yet to come up with the final Windows 10 version. So, be patient until the next update and I'll post a page on it!
