Android 5: Lollipop
After the Android Jellybean (4.2.2) and Android KitKat (4.4.4), Android has released their new version of Operating System - Android 5! I'm mainly going to mention about the new material design which is actually awesome. This update might be available for a few phones namely - Nexus, Sony, Samsung, Motorola and LG! But this update is limited to a certain no. of devices of each type -
What's New?
1. Minor Change: Soft-keys
So, in the previous versions mainly the android's soft keys had irregular shapes for the three different buttons. Still, their functions as well as the order are the same. - Back, Home, Recent Tabs. Something like -
Apart from the soft keys, the Google apps like Play Store, Google Now and G-Mail are the main ones. Even YouTube now has an offline download button which was previously a pain as you can't download the videos without a third party software application. The best app I know is TubeMate[not in play store].
2. Dubbed Material
Google has come up with a new interface look, called Material. Google is also introducing two new widgets. The first is a more power-efficient RecycleeView Widget, used for features like scrolling through contacts. The other one is a CardView Widget, which is kinda like Google now - experienced!
3. G-Mail: New Look
Even, if Android L has quite a few new User Interface(UI) features, one of the Google Apps (also termed as G Apps) G-Mail has been reconstructed... Much more color has been injected to G-Mail and the app is more both cleaner and modern...
Now you can add other e-mail accounts from servers IMAP and POP3... which are basically any outlook, yahoo, rediffmail or any other established account! This feature is available in Windows Mail app in Windows 8 and above versions.
4. The new easter egg look in Android 5.0.2
Clicking it simultaneously shows up a GIF, picture in all versions till KitKat 4.4.4!
But for the first time ever in android history, Android L has a FlappyAndroid game in it... It is surely enjoyable and people do get a really colorful feeling with the great animation!
5. Expanded Notifications and Lock screen notifications
Notifications have changed a lot in lollipop. The views have gone more detailed. There's text, inbox and image of all which can provide you additional context for the notification.
After KitKat, Lollipop is a major update in android history not only the UI or looks are changed but, even the notifications appear systematically in the lock screen. TouchWiz versions below lollipop do show the notifications in the lock screen though. But then, here you can just swipe it across which is not available in Touch Wiz.
6. 3D Muti-tasking/ Recent tabs
As seen in Touch Wiz or stock android, clicking on the 'recent apps' key you get a list of running applications. In lollipop, when the key(square) is clicked, the recent apps are organized in a beautiful manner one top of the other covering about three fourth of each tab by the other... Even scrolling through them gives an amazing effect...
After this massive android update Google has made, updating has become an issue as always. Even after KitKat it was really hard! But don't worry updating it manually has become easy... You can either go to CyanogenMod website and download the nightly ROM and run it from your android device or just flash the binary from your computer...
7. Notification Panel and quick toggles
The panel which gives you access to notifications and quick setting toggles can be pulled by the upper side. In touch wiz both of them were squeezed together and in stock, there was a button which allows you to switch between 'em. In Android Lollipop, the design is really amazing as when you pull it once the notifications appear and when you pull it again after letting it go, you can see the quick toggles. Even by using the 2-Finger method, the toggles will be displayed.
The brightness adjustment slide-bar is there in the toggles [already seen in touch wiz versions above 4.1.2, and obviously seen in iOS higher versions]. The brightness bar once when swiped less or more, makes the panel disappear expect for itself; and you can actually see how the background looks with that particular adjustment! You also have new toggles - flashlight, screen cast button (which allows you to cast your screen if you have a Chrome cast...
Trick:- Holding down a notification for a few seconds actually shows you the app which is popping up the notification.

8. Great animation
Well, comparing animations with lollipop, Kitkat is a little sugar cube. Now, lollipop is full of animations! The simplest ones - The app drawer just springs out of the circular dice button(in home screen) unlike ALL the older versions of android where the app drawer just fades in the background out of nowhere.
-Dialer
The new dialer looks really neat and well-organized. It doesn't take up the whole screen like KitKat, but the new hang up button is circular and more small unlike the old one which is rectangular covering from one side to the other... This kinda looks like iOS 8.1, not very much though... Take a look-
You'll see a lot of animations and transitions in this great version.
9. Multiple profile
Now, you can have multiple profiles on your device with Android 5.0.2! This is made to maintain your privacy. So, you also have GUEST account enabled... Suppose you lend your phone to a friend or someone.
When they open this account, it doesn't have any apps installed just like a out-of-box phone which is new!
10. Blocking/quiet mode
Clicking the volume button shows up the 3 different modes which was introduced newly and was not there in the earlier versions. The ALL switch will allow all notifications to show up, which is by default. PRIORITY switch will show the most important notifications and the Alarms... NONE switch doesn't allow anything through. But it's you wish to edit the priority and allow whichever notifications you want.
Well, some phones (GPe) do allow OTA update... Especially Nexus since it's manufactured by Google and for for doing this you have to go to : Settings>About device>Software Update...
Cyanogen Mod installer is a very easy method to update android very easily from PC. You'll need to root your phone/tab to grant user access to the app for the update. To download this update:- Go to http://get.cm/
